Ngorongoro Crater
Explore the World’s Largest Intact Volcanic Caldera – A Natural Wonder of Africa
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Tanzania’s most spectacular and unique safari destinations. Formed over two million years ago from a collapsed volcano, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the world’s largest unbroken caldera, spanning over 260 square kilometers and plunging 600 meters deep.
Often referred to as the “Eden of Africa”, the Crater hosts an astonishing concentration of wildlife, including nearly all of East Africa’s iconic animals. It’s one of the few places in Africa where you can see all Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard — in a single day. The Crater floor’s grasslands, forests, and soda lakes support over 25,000 large animals, making it a prime destination for wildlife viewing.
One of the highlights is Lake Magadi, a shallow soda lake at the center of the Crater, often dotted with flamingos and other waterbirds. The Lerai Forest shelters elephants and monkeys, while open plains are patrolled by prides of lions and spotted hyenas.
